Electrical stress control is an extremely important part of the design of medium and high voltage cable accessories. Electrical stress control is the control of the distribution and strength of the electric field inside the cable accessory. If appropriate measures are not taken to maintain the optimal distribution and strength of the electric field, free discharge will occur at the end of the shielding layer close to the ground, resulting in reduced reliability and shortened service life of the cable accessory. For cable terminals, electric field distortion is the most severe, and the most significant impact on the reliability of terminal operation is at the outer shielding cut-off point of the cable. The influence of electric field distortion at the middle joint of the cable is not only at the outer shielding cut-off point of the cable, but also at the insulation cut-off point at the end of the cable. In order to control the electrical stress at the cable terminal, our usual method is the application of stress cones and stress tubes.

Using a stress cone for control: also known as the geometric shape method. The stress cone extends the cut off part of the insulation shield layer to make the zero potential form a horn shape, which improves the electric field distribution of the insulation shield layer and reduces the possibility of corona generation. The electric field intensity distribution is relatively uniform, which avoids the breakdown of the insulation layer due to the concentrated electric field, and ensures the service life of the cable.

As an important structure, the stress cone plays a role in balancing electrical stress between the terminal and intermediate joints.
