The difference between cable insulation materials PE, PVC, XLPE

At present, the insulation materials used in cable production are roughly divided into three categories: pe, pvc, and xlpe, and the insulation materials used in cables are introduced below.  Detailed classification of cable insulation materials and their respective characteristics 

Electriacl Cable

PVC: polyvinyl chloride, is a polymer formed by the free polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer under specific conditions. It has the characteristics of stability, acid resistance, alkali resistance, corrosion resistance and aging resistance, and is widely used in building materials, daily necessities, pipelines and pipes, wires and cables, sealing materials, etc. Divided into soft and hard: soft is mainly used to make packaging materials, agricultural films, etc., and is widely used in the manufacture of wire and cable insulation, such as: ordinary PVC insulated power cables; The hard one is generally used to make pipes and plates. The biggest feature of polyvinyl chloride material is flame retardant, so it is widely used in the field of fire protection, and is one of the most common insulation materials for flame retardant and fire-resistant wire and cable applications.  


PE: Polyethylene, is a thermoplastic resin prepared by polymerization of ethylene, non-toxic and harmless, superior low temperature resistance, and can resist most acid and alkali erosion, excellent electrical insulation performance. At the same time, because polyethylene has the characteristics of non-polarity, it has the characteristics of low loss and high conductive strength, so it is generally used as an insulation material for high-voltage wires and cables.  


XLPE: Cross-linked polyethylene, is a high-grade form of polyethylene material after transformation. After improvement, its physical properties and chemical properties have been greatly improved compared with PE materials, and at the same time, its heat resistance level has been significantly improved. Therefore, the wire and cable of cross-linked polyethylene insulating material has the advantages of polyethylene insulated wire and cable incomparable: light weight, good heat resistance, corrosion resistance, relatively large insulation resistance, etc.

Compared with thermoplastic polyethylene, XLPE insulation has the following advantages: 


1 It improves the heat deformation resistance, improves the mechanical properties at high temperature, and improves the resistance to environmental stress cracking and heat aging.  


2 Enhance chemical stability and solvent resistance, reduce cold flow, basically maintain the original electrical properties, long-term working temperature up to 125 °C and 150 °C, cross-linked polyethylene insulated wires and cables, but also improve the short-circuit endurance, its short-term withstand temperature can reach 250 °C, the same thickness of wire and cable, cross-linked polyethylene ampacity is much larger.  


3 XLPE insulated wire and cable has excellent mechanical, waterproof and radiation resistance, so it has a wide range of applications. Such as: electrical internal connection wire, motor lead, lighting lead, automotive low-voltage signal control line, locomotive wire, subway wire and cable, mining environmental protection cable, marine cable, nuclear power laying cable, TV high-voltage line, X-RAY firing high-voltage line, and power transmission wire and cable and other industries.  


The difference between cable insulation materials PVC, PE, XLPE PVC: low working temperature, short heat aging life, small transmission capacity, low overload capacity, smoke and acid gas hazard during fire. General products in the wire and cable industry, good physical and mechanical properties, good processing performance, low cost and selling price. However, it contains halogens, and the sheath dosage is the largest. 


PE: Excellent electrical performance, with all the advantages of PVC. Commonly used in wire or cable insulation, data line insulation, low dielectric constant, suitable for data cable, communication line, various computer peripheral wire core line insulation.  XLPE: Almost as good as the electrical properties of PE, while the long-term working temperature is relatively higher than PE, the mechanical properties are better than PE, and the aging resistance is better. New environmental protection products with high temperature resistance and good environmental resistance, thermosetting plastics. It is often used in electronic wires and places with high environmental resistance requirements.  


The difference between XLPO and XLPE XLPO (cross-linked polyolefin): EVA, a polymer of low-smoke halogen-free, irradiated crosslinked or vulcanized rubber crosslinked olefin. A general term for a class of thermoplastic resins obtained by the separate polymerization or copolymerization of α-olefins such as ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, 1-pentene, 1-octene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, and some cyclic olefins.  XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene): XLPE, cross-linked polyethylene, silane cross-linked or chemically crosslinked, is a thermoplastic resin made of ethylene by polymerization. In industry, it also includes copolymers of ethylene with small amounts of α-olefins.
